Jabal Amman is one of the capital's historic districts, with parts in both the east and the west of the city. It is known for narrow streets, some laid out in the 1930s, and for its many heritage sites. The city's first roundabout, the 1st Circle, is here on Rainbow Street, which draws many tourists and foreign visitors.
The Greater Amman Municipality places the district between the 1st Circle and the 3rd Circle, though many people use the name for the area up to the 5th Circle or even further along Zahran Street. Main streets include Zahran, Al Buhturi and Queen Noor streets.
Landmarks include the King Hussein Club, Souk Jara, the Shoman library, hotels such as Le Royal, the InterContinental and Hyatt Amman, several embassies and Al Khalidi Hospital. Schools include the Islamic Scientific College, the Ahliyyah School for Girls and Terra Sancta College.
Property prices are relatively high, linked to the embassies, offices, hotels and hospitals and the area's strong security. Homes range from villas with gardens and palaces, some dating from the 1920s, to apartments of varied sizes. Expats often choose Jabal Amman, and the stretch between the 4th and 5th Circles offers modern, high-finish apartments in limited supply.
