Telaa Al Ali is a densely populated district on high ground in Amman, more than 1,000 metres above sea level. It became part of the capital at the start of 1987, when the surrounding municipalities were merged into Amman. It sits close to Al Jubayha and Swaileh, and two of the city's main roads, Al Madina Al Munawwara Street and University of Jordan Street, pass through it.
The area is packed with apartment buildings and commercial strips, and both apartments and villas come up for sale and rent. Most residents are described as middle- and upper-middle-income households, and many students from different countries live here in furnished apartments. The University of Jordan and Princess Sumaya University for Technology are among the universities listed in and around the area.
Everyday needs are well covered, with Al Sultan central market, banks, pharmacies, plenty of restaurants and cafés, and malls within reach. Hospitals in and around the district include The Gardens Hospital, Ibn Al Haytham Hospital and the Specialty Eye Hospital. Al Hussein Gardens and the historic Rujm Al Malfouf are nearby, and the Sports City and University of Jordan Bus Rapid Transit stations are a few kilometres away. The name is traced to a man called Al Ali from the Bani Adwan tribe, known for his wisdom and for settling disputes.
