Abdoun is made up of North Abdoun and South Abdoun, inside the Zahran area of central Amman. It is widely known as one of the city's upscale districts, and Hagzi's expat guide mentions its nickname, the ‘Mayfair of Amman’. The main roads carry heavy traffic, while the side streets are quiet and lined with large homes. At roughly 850 to 950 metres above sea level, it has fairly mild summers and cool winters.
Many embassies are based here, including those of the United States, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Portugal and Syria, and a sizeable international community lives in the area. Schools, hospitals, banks and shops cover daily needs, Taj Mall is the main shopping landmark, and there is a wide choice of restaurants and cafés. Green spaces include King Hussein Park, Abdoun Forest Park, the Housing Bank Park and Martyrs' Park.
The Abdoun suspension bridge, also called the Kamal Al Shaer Bridge, spans Wadi Abdoun and links North Abdoun with Al Ridwan; it was handed over in 2006.
Homes range from luxury apartments to standalone houses. Some residential compounds share rooftops, swimming pools and gyms, while a private pool or jacuzzi usually comes at a premium.
