Deir Ghbar is a relatively young residential district in west Amman, lying between Abdoun and Swefiyeh and stretching towards the Airport Road. Its name comes from its very fine soil, which used to rise as dust whenever carts and caravans crossed it.
The area is known for being calm and safe, with wide, clean streets and modern buildings, many of them with swimming pools and children's play gardens. Shops are limited to a few restaurants and bakeries. Jouneh roundabout, the only roundabout in the area, is a familiar local reference point. Many residents are business people, engineers and public figures, and the quiet streets encourage outdoor exercise. Expats also like the district for its calm atmosphere and its park, where people walk at weekends.
Villas are the most common home type, alongside spacious apartments with high-quality finishes, a number of large private palaces, and flat plots of land with open views. Property prices are known to be high compared with the rest of Amman.
Local landmarks include Al Kadhim Mosque and Al Shuhada park. Schools nearby include Abdul Hamid Sharaf School, the French schools, Al Qimma Schools and the Canadian schools.
