Swefiyeh is a west Amman neighbourhood that falls administratively under Wadi Al Seer. It sits between the 6th and 7th Circles, close to the 8th Circle and not far from the 5th, with Deir Ghbar next door and Airport Road within easy reach. Princess Alia Street on its eastern side links it to the 5th Circle and Abdoun.
The area is known as one of the city's upscale addresses. Housing is mainly villas and apartments, and the commercial side is just as active, with hotels such as the Four Seasons, company offices, local and international restaurants, cafés, boutiques, and clothing and jewellery shops. Wakalat Street is its well-known shopping strip, and malls in and around the area include Galleria Mall, Avenue Mall, Al Baraka Mall and Swefiyeh Village Mall. Several embassies and cultural centres are also based here.
For families, nearby schools include Jamil Shaker Secondary School for Boys, the local comprehensive secondary school for girls and Al Sham International Schools, while healthcare options include Dar Al Salam Hospital, the Arab Medical Centre and a 24-hour emergency medical centre. Local stories link the name either to short summer grazing stays, known as al-suwayf, or to wool shearing by Circassian settlers.
