Um Al Summaq is known as one of Amman's upscale residential areas and falls administratively under Telaa Al Ali. Until the late 1990s it was mainly villas on large plots; since then developers have added high-end apartment buildings with generous floor areas, giving the area a mix of both. It is bounded by Mecca Street and King Abdullah II (Medical City) Street, with Khalda, Telaa Al Ali and Dabouq around it and Wadi Al Seer not far away.
The area is also a major shopping destination. Mecca Mall and City Mall are both here, alongside a market known for building materials and construction fit-out suppliers, plus restaurants and cafés. At around 1,100 metres it has mild summers and cold winters, and its wide streets suit walking.
Nearby are King Hussein Medical City, Al Hussein Gardens, King Hussein Business Park, Al Shaab roundabout and the Al Dawood commercial complex. Health options include Al Haramain Specialty Hospital, the Royal Rehabilitation Centre and Queen Rania Al Abdullah Children's Hospital, while schools include the Modern English Schools, Al Jazeera Schools for Boys and the Modern Montessori School. The name comes from the sumac trees that once grew here in abundance.
Mecca Mall and City Mall are both located in the area.
